Ionization
Copper has been recognized for centuries for its ability to destroy bacteria, viruses, and algae, while being completely safe for humans. Today it is utilized in the pipes carrying our water, kitchen services, and hospital fixtures and paint, among others, to help prevent the spread of infection and disease. Copper in its various forms is also sold in pool and pond stores around the world for use as pesticides, algaecides and fungicides.
Copper ionization is brought about by electrolysis. An electric current is passed through a copper plate, causing copper ions to form. These positive copper ions are then carried away by the water flowing through the ionization tube. Once in the water supply, the copper ions are attracted to oppositely charged items, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The copper ions then bond with the cell walls of the bacteria, viruses, and fungi, interfering with cell wall permeability and nutrient uptake, causing the organism to die.
Ionization technology was first employed by NASA to provide clean drinking water to astronauts of the Apollo space missions. Today the same technology is used by Barramundi Pools systems to create safe, refreshing, chemical free pool water for you to enjoy.
